It’s time for a new approach
Instagram (social media in general, really) is in a weird place right now. We need a better way to stay in touch with each other and find a sense of community again. I’ve been thinking this over for months, and keep coming back to mailing lists, as crazy as that sounds. I’ve been incredibly skeptical of this idea, but after giving it some serious thought I think it might be the best option we have right now.
We all have email, and there is no algorithm in your inbox controlling what you see. If you’re interested in my work, you can sign up for my mailing list and you’ll actually get to see what I share. On Instagram you can give me a follow and never see anything from me again, because your feed is full of algorithm-suggested content.
My goals for this are:
To get away from social media algorithms and actually reach my audience
To connect with those who are interested in my work but are not on Instagram
I plan to use this to announce things like new artwork, projects I’ve been working on, and events. Emails will probably be less than once a month, most likely only every few months. Don’t worry, I get it. I’m wary of newsletters too and have utmost respect for your inbox. I won’t post content for the sake of content, and it won’t just be a bunch of self promotion either. I’ll do my best to keep the posts interesting and hopefully something you look forward to reading.
You should subscribe if you:
Like my work and want to see more
Might want a license, commission, or prints someday
Could be interested in future collaboration
Follow me on Instagram but never see my posts
I won’t delete or abandon my Instagram account, I’m just not going to stress about it anymore. I never did manage to keep up with posting regularly, but the pressure to do so was on my mind ALL the time. So the change is really just on my end; if you’re following me there, you likely won’t notice much, if any, difference. I’ll post when I feel inspired to post, and the rest of the time I’ll focus on other things.
Will there be paywalled content?
I have no plans to paywall content or offer extras for subscriptions. I’m just looking for an effective way to stay connected with everyone who is interested in my work.
Substack does encourage paid subscriptions, but these are completely optional.
Paid subs will help me offer my artwork and other services for free to those who benefit from my work but can’t afford to pay for it, such as schools and charities. These are the people I hear from most often, and I always want to just say yes without having to think about whether or not there will be money involved. A stable income from subscriptions would help me make more of a meaningful difference with my work.
I want to emphasize that the main purpose of this is to get away from social media and keep in touch more effectively with those who are interested in my work, so please don’t feel pressured to subscribe for money <3
Thanks for being here!
I sincerely appreciate everyone who is willing to give this a chance. As a person who generally hates newsletters, it means so much that you would trust me with your inbox, and I do not take that responsibility lightly.
If you know anyone else who might be interested in signing up, please don’t hesitate to share it with them! I would be immensely grateful for any help getting this started. My reach on Instagram has been so weak lately, I need all the help I can get.
Thank you so much for reading, and for joining me on this new journey. I appreciate it more than you can imagine!
Great! I downloaded the app and followed you over here onto Substack. I have been thinking very similarly for a while now, about newsletters, algorithms, art, and even game dev! Looking forward to this new approach.
